An archaeologist descends into the Holtun Cenote

I’ve seen this quite a few times and it is quite old, but it never fails to astonish me and blow my mind! The Mayan cenotes and the disappearing diver.

A diver disappears in a Mayan portal in Belize in one of the many cenotes around the area. The dives also uncovered massive femur bones, tusks and pelvic bones which were revealed to be fossilized.

Archaeologists believe these pools were understood to be entries to the Mayan underworld, Shibalba. Many offerings are subject to being down there and recorded, but archaeologists are still removing small amounts to get a better idea as to the sites purpose. They may have been pilgrimage areas where the Mayans would journey to, and give offerings to the gods.

There are several different cenotes in this area in Belize, and it has been revealed that they are all connected through underwater tunnels.

Cenotes or pools can be found all over these areas, and are significant to Mayan civilisation.
